Ben Ledi Family Walk – putting a spring in our step

SUNDAY 15th April saw more than 170 pairs of boots climb this 2884ft high mountain near Callander in Perthshire as part of a family walk hosted by The Mountains and The People project.

Marking the half way point in this 5-year project, the family walk was timed to highlight the launch of a fundraising campaign Mend our Mountains: Make one Million which is looking to raise £100,000 to improve two iconic mountain paths here in Scotland.

With a small army of marshals and volunteer rangers, a free shuttle bus operating between public car parks in Callander and Ben Ledi along with a prize draw with a selection of limited edition Gore-Tex goodies, all this family walk needed was for the Scottish weather to be kind!

Chilly but dry, the day attracted all sorts of walkers from those who had never ventured up a mountain before to the more seasoned hikers bagging themselves another climb.  Kids and dogs were prevalent on the day with many climbing a significant way up this distinctive Corbett.

Ian Moffett, Chairman of the Outdoor Access Trust for Scotland who organised the event commented; “We are delighted with the number of people who have come along to this event and very glad the weather has been kind.  The vision of our project The Mountains and The People is to involve the people of Scotland, and beyond, in the enhancement and protection of the wild and special qualities of the mountains within Scotland’s National Parks – something we have definitely managed to achieve today which is fantastic.”
