Adopt a Path

Adopt A Path is a flagship volunteering initiative of the Outdoor Access Trust for Scotland. It lets people who are passionate about Scotland’s outdoors become custodians of some of our most important upland paths, and conserve fragile landscapes.

As an Adopt A Path volunteer you will be trained and supported to safely survey paths for erosion damage or other issues. You will be expected to report on your path once or twice a year, so we can get contractors or volunteer workers on site to carry out maintenance and paths are maintained for generations to come.

There are paths available for adoption in both Cairngorm and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs national parks. Some are long or remote, others short and accessible. The paths included in the scheme can be found on the map below.

Paths can be adopted by individuals or groups (such as hill-walking clubs). Some are short sections, others are from car park to summit; some paths are in remote locations, others more easily accessible. Once registered, volunteers can choose which path they would like to adopt from the list of available routes.

Adopt A Path volunteers should have the following skills and experience:

  • be used to spending time outdoors
  • have good physical fitness
  • be confident lone working
  • have good health and safety awareness.
  • be experienced hill walkers
  • be self-reliant in mountain/upland environments
